How do you choose between an icon and a wordmark?

The written name leads if people search for that name and there is not yet a symbol they recognise in the street. The icon leads when the name is long and the sign, the apron or the app will crop it. Say the name out loud and measure it on the glass and in the Instagram circle. If it does not fit whole, you need a short version, not a new drawing on a whim.
