Is it better to photograph dishes in the restaurant or in a studio?

For a restaurant, in the restaurant. The guest will compare the photo with the table, not with a studio backdrop. tuinsta.design photographs in the venue, in Madrid, with the house’s light and crockery. A studio fits when you sell a packaged product and there is no room to show.

Why the venue wins in hospitality

A dish photo in a restaurant has to survive the moment someone sits down. If the background, the light and the size do not resemble the room, the disappointment is immediate. Shooting on site avoids that jump: the same table, the same plate, roughly the same hour of service.

You also solve, in one visit, what a studio cannot invent: the frontage, the bar, the pass and the team. A bank made only of products leaves the Google listing and the Instagram profile half done. People want to see where they are going to eat.

When a studio does make sense

It makes sense if the object is a jar, a box or a bottle that travels without the venue, and if the photo is for a shelf or a shop listing with a controlled background. It can also make sense if you need a detail that is impossible during service and the dish survives the trip.

It does not make sense to move a neighbourhood portion “so it looks cleaner”. The trip cools the sauce, changes the volume and forces you to rebuild a plate the kitchen already knows how to send. In that case the studio is a detour.

Light, crockery and the risk of a lying photo

In the venue you work with the light you have, plus a discreet help if the room is dark. The aim is not an advertisement plate. It is that the guest recognises the colour of the stew. The crockery is yours. Bringing a set of studio white plates changes the house.

Retouching follows the same rule: lift a crumb or a dirty reflection, do not rebuild a larger portion. If more light is needed, say so. Do not “fix” it afterwards until the plate no longer exists.

How we do it at tuinsta.design

Cristina comes to the restaurant, agrees the order with the kitchen and photographs when the plate is ready to leave. Room and detail go in the same visit whenever the brief asks for them. We do not keep a set you can send the food to so it “looks better”.

If your case is a packaged product and not a dining room, say so at the start and we will see whether the job is food product, not restaurant. For bars, cafés and dining rooms in Madrid and the sierra, the practical answer is one: photograph where it is served.

How it gets decided in the first message

If you write “I want menu photos and the dining room visible”, the answer is already taken: it is done in the venue. If you write “I have a jar I sell elsewhere and there is no room”, then we talk about whether the job is product, not restaurant. Those two sentences avoid a badly planned visit.

There is a middle case worth naming: the venue is still in works and you want to announce the opening anyway. There is no point pretending a finished room in a studio. You photograph what exists — materials, the works, a test plate — or you wait. Inventing the dining room is the shortest path to a disappointed review on the day you open.

Cristina asks this before a date is closed. It is not paperwork: it is the difference between a file the house can use and a session that only works in the portfolio of the person who shot it.

If you are still unsure after this, send two photos: one of the plate as it leaves the kitchen and one of the room in real light. Cristina will say in a message whether the work belongs in the venue or whether you do not need a session yet. That short reply avoids paying for a studio to solve a problem of hour and crockery.
